What Temperature Should I Keep My Thermostat to Prevent Frozen Pipes?

Preventing Frozen Pipes in winter in Atlanta area

Atlanta winters may not be as harsh as those up north, but temperatures can still dip below freezing. When that happens, your home’s pipes are at risk of freezing and bursting—a costly disaster no homeowner wants.

When fall is ending and the forecast calls for dropping temperatures, one of the most common questions we hear at Fix & Flow Plumbing Co. is: “What temperature should I keep my thermostat to prevent frozen pipes?”

The Recommended Thermostat Setting

To keep pipes from freezing, the U.S. Department of Energy recommends maintaining your thermostat at a minimum of 55°F (13°C), even when you’re away from home. At Fix & Flow, we suggest Atlanta homeowners keep it closer to 60–65°F during extended cold spells to be extra safe. This ensures enough warmth circulates through your home and keeps water moving through your pipes.

Why Frozen Pipes Are So Dangerous

Frozen pipes aren’t just inconvenient—they can cause serious water damage. When water freezes, it expands and puts immense pressure on your plumbing. A burst pipe can lead to thousands of dollars in repair costs, mold growth, and structural damage. According to the American Red Cross, pipe bursts from freezing are one of the most common causes of property damage during winter.

Additional Tips to Prevent Frozen Pipes

  • Open cabinet doors: This allows warm air to circulate around pipes under sinks.
  • Let faucets drip: A slow trickle of water can keep pipes from freezing.
  • Seal leaks: Close gaps near windows, doors, and your home’s foundation to keep cold air out.
  • Insulate exposed pipes: Use foam pipe insulation on pipes in garages, crawl spaces, and attics.
  • Know where your shut-off valve is: If a pipe does burst, shutting off water quickly can prevent major flooding.

Should I Call a Plumber?

Yes—if you suspect frozen pipes, notice strange noises in your plumbing, or experience reduced water flow, it’s best to call a professional right away. At Fix & Flow Plumbing Co., we specialize in frozen pipe repair, leak detection, and winter plumbing maintenance. Our team serves the Intown Atlanta area and is available to help prevent or repair pipe damage before it becomes a major problem.
