Hair Clogged In the Shower Drain

  • March 23, 2019
Tangled Wet Hair

Have you ever had the misfortune of ending your morning shower to find that you’re standing ankle-deep in water? You’re not alone. Standing water isn’t uncommon, but it is a clear indication you have a clogged drain. Clogged drains can cause more problems than just unsightly bathtub rings. It’s best for your pipes and your sanity to identify the cause of the blockage as quickly as possible.

A clogged shower drain is usually caused by a small blockage of hair or other build-up that has accumulated, but it might also be due to a more significant obstruction in your sewer line. Over time, a clog may allow water to seep through shower joints via gaps in grout or caulking. You may even notice an unpleasant odor coming from your drain, which is usually an indication that there is debris clogging the pipes. Serious blockages may even result in bathroom flooding.

Unclogging Your Shower Drain

To immediately address a clogged drain, do your best to remove any hair directly on or underneath the drain. Remove the drain cover and use a simple drain snake or unbent coat hanger to pull out the clog. Another good step to take is pouring boiling water down your shower drain. The high temperature of the water can help break down soap scum and other build-up so that it can wash away more easily. You can also try using a plunger to release hair blockages.

Preventing Drain Clogs

One of the easiest ways to prevent future blockages is by ensuring that your drain cover is correctly in place and supplementing it with a hair-catching tool designed to stop most hair before it goes down the drain. You can find these in most hardware stores, the simplest of which are made of wire mesh and fit right over your drain. They’re easy to use and clean out.

Using Drain Cleaners

While products designed to clear clogged pipes may offer a quick and affordable solution, repeated use of these harsh, caustic chemicals can damage your pipes and shower fittings. They can also be hazardous to your health and contaminate the environment.

Professional Drain Service

If you’re battling a drain that is so blocked you need these chemicals or you’re noticing repeated clogs, it may be time to contact a professional. Professional plumbers can service your shower drain in a safe, effective way — giving you peace of mind and getting you out of standing water first thing in the morning.
