Whole-House Water Filter vs. Under-Sink Filter: Which One Does Your Atlanta Home Actually Need?

  • April 20, 2026

You’ve decided you want filtered water. Smart move. Now comes the question that trips up most Atlanta homeowners: which system is actually right for your situation?

Whole-house filters and under-sink filters are both effective — they just solve different problems. Choosing the wrong one doesn’t mean you wasted money, but it does mean you might be paying more than you need to, or not addressing the real issue in your home. Here’s how to think through it.

What a Whole-House Filter Does

A whole-house filter (also called a point-of-entry filter) installs where your main water line enters the home. Every drop of water that flows through your house — to every faucet, shower, toilet, dishwasher, and washing machine — passes through it first.

The most common whole-house systems combine a sediment pre-filter with a carbon block filter. This handles chlorine, chloramines, sediment, rust, and many large-particle contaminants. Some systems add a water softener stage or a UV purification stage for additional treatment.

Whole-house filtration is the right choice when:

  • Your home has older galvanized or copper pipes that introduce sediment or metallic taste into the water throughout the house
  • You have hard water that’s affecting your water heater, appliances, and shower glass (a softener may be more appropriate here)
  • Family members have skin sensitivities to chlorine — since showering in chlorinated water is a real exposure route
  • You want to protect your water heater and appliances from sediment buildup

What an Under-Sink Filter Does

An under-sink filter (point-of-use filter) installs beneath your kitchen sink and treats only the water at that specific faucet. You’re typically adding a dedicated filtered water tap at the sink, which you use for drinking and cooking.

The most effective under-sink option is a reverse osmosis (RO) system, which uses a membrane to remove a very wide range of contaminants: lead, nitrates, fluoride, arsenic, heavy metals, and most dissolved solids. RO systems produce the cleanest drinking water of any residential option.

Under-sink filtration is the right choice when:

  • Your primary concern is drinking and cooking water quality
  • You have a newer home where pipe-related contamination isn’t a concern
  • You want maximum removal of specific contaminants (lead, fluoride, nitrates) at the tap
  • Budget is a factor — under-sink systems are generally less expensive to install

Side-by-Side Comparison

Factor Whole-House Filter Under-Sink Filter
Installation cost (Atlanta) $800 – $2,500+ $300 – $800
What it filters All water in the home Drinking/cooking water only
Contaminant removal Sediment, chlorine, chloramines, rust Wide spectrum (RO removes lead, fluoride, etc.)
Maintenance Filter changes every 3-6 months; whole-system service annually Filter and membrane changes per manufacturer schedule
Best for Older homes, pipe concerns, skin sensitivity Renters, newer homes, targeted drinking water quality
Ongoing cost Moderate (replacement filters) Low to moderate (RO membrane every 1-3 years)

The Hybrid Approach

Many Atlanta homeowners do both — and for good reason. A whole-house sediment filter protects your appliances and handles bulk contaminants throughout the home, while an under-sink RO system handles the highest-bar drinking water quality at the kitchen tap. The whole-house filter also extends the life of your RO membrane by pre-filtering heavy sediment before it reaches the under-sink system.

This combination is particularly popular in older Intown Atlanta homes where pipe conditions are a concern and the homeowners also want exceptional drinking water quality.

Questions to Ask Yourself Before Choosing

  • How old is your home, and do you know what your pipes are made of?
  • Are you concerned about showering in chlorinated water, or primarily about drinking water?
  • Have you had your water tested? (If not, it’s worth doing before buying a system.)
  • Are you a homeowner or renter? (Under-sink systems are easier to take with you.)
  • Do you have specific contaminants you’re trying to address, like lead or fluoride?

Not Sure Which System Is Right for Your Home?
